Fri 01/18/08 09:23 - WARNING! Blue-Green Algae
Currently the Barwon River is closed due to Blue-Green Algae!
For those that want to know the details,
The sample reading taken on Monday 14 Jan 2008 at the end of Wilson Road showed that blue-green algae count was 18,000 cells per ml, down from 35,000 cells per ml last week. The algal type is still Anabaena circinalis a known toxic species for the Barwon River.
With 18,000 cell per ml the biovolume for this blue-green algae is 4.5 mm3/L, still more than the recommended safe level of 4.0 mm3/L for recreational use.
The river will need to have two consecutive safe readings before it can be opened for skiing.
